For the Dakdorpen foundation I built this watchtower-chair, in collaboration with Laszlo Barz and Sebastiaan van Kints. The chair creates an even higher overlook on the rooftop of creative space "De Kroon" in Rotterdam. The chair holds room for both people and animals. The chair consist of several different nesting boxes for birds and bats.
I consulted the Nationale Tuinvogel Telling (national garden bird census) to know which birds are common in the area. There was no record yet of the area surrounding the rooftop, so I went out on a little field trip to do the counting myself. After researching the local birds I made a selection of the species that would nest as high as 12 meters on the rooftop.

The selection of birds is fine-tuned in consultation with Bureau Stadsnatuur. We chose to make room for birds which are in danger of disaPpearing from the area. Such as: the black redstart, swift and house sparrow.

The cladding of the chair is completely built up from repurposed HPL, bought at Buurman Rotterdam. The cladding was harvested from a building in the surrounding area of Delfshaven. The nesting boxes are also made of second hand okoume plywood.
